“The Great Cast” is a painting that depicts Ghanaian Ga (a tribe in Ghana) men at sea in
a locally made fishing canoe, made from timber by specially trained and experienced
craftsmen at the fishing harbor here in Nungua. In this painting you see fishermen who
are in the process of casting their nets as they hope for a successful catch ahead.

Equestrian Nii Bortey 2024

Description
In this piece, I portray Nii Bortey a ga (tribe in Ghana) boy riding his horse along the
shore of the coco beach in Nungua, Ghana. He symbolizes youthfulness and adventure
while his horse represents victory, strength, protection, freedom and companionship.
The expressiveness of the painting is felt due to the contrast between the realistic
representation of Nii Bortey and his Horse and the expressive impression of the
foreground and the background of the painting.
Through this piece I celebrate the beauty of existence, the joy of exploration and the
connection we have with nature that shapes our lives.

Nungua Kayaye 2022

Description
Nungua is a fishing community located in the heart of the fast-growing city, Accra in my
home country Ghana. In these parts, head potters locally known as “Kayaye” are an
integral part of the community. They transport goods on their heads with the help of a head
pan. They can be found going about their daily activities in places like the market, harbor,
seashore and in the fish market. This piece highlights the beauty in the struggle to make
ends meet. I was interested in the skillfully tied cloth (locally called kekyire) and it’s
beautiful pattern. I was also I intrigued by the Kayayes ability to skillfully balance the headpan on her head as she hurriedly commutes. Not leaving out the interesting reflection the
kekyire leaves on the aluminum head pan.
I wanted to capture that moment and my skill in watercolor helped me to achieve that.
This painting was a winning work at the Japan International institute watercolor
exhibition 2024.

Fattah Osman 2023

Description
This painting captures the image of a man from the northern parts of ghana going about his
morning routine which is chewing and brushing his teeth with his freshly broken neem tree
branch in his compound. He wonders in thoughts as he hopes the day will be a good one.
This painting will be exhibited at the New Zealand watercolor society exhibition in
october 2024 and won an Excellence Award

No Fishing Tuesday 2024

Description
On Tuesdays here in Nungua, fishing is banned. The day is set aside as the day of rest
where fishermen take the day off and have a good rest. They engage in activities such as
spending time with their loved ones, mending their nets, repairing damages boats and
preparing for fishing the next day.
This painting captures the Tuesday atmosphere in Nungua where there are no fishing
activities going on.

The Arrival, Busua 2023

Description
“The Arrival, Busua” is a painting that captures the moment fishermen at Busua beach in
Ghana, arrived in the early hours of the morning after fishing all night. In this painting you
can see a group of people including children helping to pull the fishing boat ashore. This is
a regular activity in these parts and after the boast is docked, the fishermen reward those
who assisted with some fishes.

Lighthouse, James Town 2022

Description
“The lighthouse” is a graphite on paper piece that captures the famous Jamestown
lighthouse. A colonial-era lighthouse built in the 1930s replacing an earlier lighthouse
that had been built in 1871. Behind it is an ongoing construction of a new Harbor aimed
to improve the lives of the indigens as fishing is their main source of income and
livelihood. It is in this exact location where the famous ChaleWote art festival begun, but
today the art festival is held at the historic Osu castle while the new art festival W)mba is
celebrated in jamestown within the same period.

Dark Times 2024

Description
This was one of the darkest days of my life in 2024. I lost a loved one and this is a picture of
a woman I took also silently weeping at her funeral. I decided to paint this because it
captured her moment of vulnerability which she tried very hard to hide. She is dressed in
black which symbolizes grief and pain. Pain, I don’t wish on anyone. This piece reminds me
of that dark day and how life throws tough challenges at you when you least expect it.

At Dock, Nungua 2024

Description
This is a plein air painting which I started on site but completed in the studio. Capturing the
docked boats at the small canal where boats are kept after a long day’s work. I was mainly
interested in the beautiful sky and the multiple ropes keeping the canoes at bay.

Wetlands, Nungua 2023

Description
This is a plein air painting which I started on site but completed in the studio. It captures a
red docked fishing boat in the canal of the Nungua fishing harbor. This type of fishing boat
is rarely found in these parts as it is relatively expensive that the locally made fishing boats.

Sunset, Busua 2023

Description
Busia is a fishing community located in the Ahantaman Weat District of the western region
of Ghana. It is home to the Akan tribe, the indigens speak Akan and Nzema language. It is
home to the famous Asa Baako (One Dance) Festival held every year. In this piece I depict
the beautiful sunset accompanied with fog during the evenings.

Description
Tafari Is an artist friend that grew up in the abyss of Nungua and Nima concurrently. His
father was a seaman and his mother a trader. When he is not in his studio, he likes to
spend some time on the beach with some horses whenever he can. On this faithful day I
decided to take a picture of him on the beach and tell his story.
